The comedy The Nerd written by Larry Shue and directed by Teddy Aspen-Sanchez is slated to finish out the 53rd season at the Las Cruces Community Theatre.
The Nerd is set in Terre Haute, Indiana in lthe mid 80's. It’s the story of Willum Cubbert, an unassuming young architect, who is landlord to friends Tansy and Axel. Tansy is a smart, attractive woman, with a mutual attraction to Willum, but she is determined to leave in order to pursue a career in television meteorology in Washington, D.C. Axel is a know-it-all drama critic who was once engaged to Tansy. Axel and Tansy are at a house party when Willum becomes host to unexpected houseguest Rick Steadman, who saved Willum's life in Vietnam. Willum promised Rick that he could come to him for help at any time. Rick decides to move in and Willum feels that he can't say no. His stay leads to one incident after another until Willum is pushed to the edge.
The play brings several local well-known actors back to the stage. Joel Fisk plays Willum, Karen Buerdsell portrays Tansy, Robert (Bobcat) Young is Axel, Victor Zamora is Warnock, Mike Cruz plays Rick, Mary Huhmann portrays Clelia and Alban Huhmann is Thor.
“Being a former student and current performer of improvisation, I've learned the art of making order out of chaos. This is why this show resonates so much with me as we get to watch the life Willum Cubbert fall into complete disarray, and learn how things get solved in the end,” adds Director Teddy Aspen-Sanchez, who has been acting in Las Cruces for 25 years. The Nerd is another addition to his resume with hopes of attending graduate school for directing soon. Aspen-Sanchez hopes to one day own his own theatre to produce traditional and improvisational theatre.
